- Eleven firms, including Kirkland & Ellis, Latham & Watkins and Skadden, are supporting trainees stranded by Weil's wind-down.
- Weil recruits approximately 15 trainees annually on a £60,000 starting salary, per the Legal Cheek Firms Most List 2027.
- Weil's management committee recommended an 'orderly wind-down' after more than 90 years in business and around 1,200 lawyers globally.
- Partner vote on the wind-down proposal is expected in the coming days.

Eleven leading US and City law firms have stepped in to rescue future trainees whose training contracts with Weil will no longer go ahead, following the firm's decision to wind down its operations after more than 90 years in business.
The firms offering support are Akin, Baker McKenzie, Debevoise, Jones Day, Kirkland & Ellis, Latham & Watkins, Macfarlanes, Paul Weiss, Skadden, Sullivan & Cromwell and Willkie, according to a report by Financial News citing a person familiar with the matter. More firms are expected to join them in the coming weeks as Weil's graduate recruitment team continues discussions with other outfits.
Who has been left in limbo?
The affected candidates are not fresh applicants. Many are already partway through their studies, including preparation for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). They now face the prospect of securing a training contract elsewhere, despite having already succeeded in one of the most competitive recruitment processes in the legal profession.
The scale of the disruption is tangible. The Legal Cheek Firms Most List 2027 shows that Weil recruits approximately 15 trainees each year. The firm offered a starting salary of £60,000 and covered the costs of students' law conversion courses and SQE preparation. For those mid-course, that financial and professional scaffolding has vanished.
What support are the firms offering?
The assistance varies between firms, but the common thread is speed and reduced friction. According to the report, the measures include:
- Streamlining training contract applications by removing certain recruitment stages
- Allowing affected candidates to submit their CVs directly, bypassing standard entry routes
For practitioners and graduate recruitment teams, the practical consequence is a coordinated market response to an abrupt withdrawal. Candidates who had cleared Weil's vetting now have a direct channel into eleven rival firms, several of them direct competitors in private equity and restructuring work.
How did Weil reach this point?
Weil announced last week that its management committee had recommended an "orderly wind-down". The decision brought months of turbulence to a head. The firm had experienced a run of senior departures, unsuccessful merger discussions and prolonged leadership uncertainty.
The New York-founded firm has around 1,200 lawyers globally and has been in business for more than 90 years. Its collapse ranks among the most dramatic downfalls of an elite US law firm in recent memory.
The wind-down proposal is expected to go before partners for a vote in the coming days. The firm has said it would continue supporting staff during the closure process.
What happens next?
Attention now turns to two groups. The first is the partners, whose vote will determine the formal timetable of the wind-down. The second is the trainee cohort, whose futures depend on how many more firms join the eleven already offering streamlined routes.
The early signs point to a widening effort. The Financial News report indicates that additional firms are likely to follow suit, with Weil's own graduate recruitment team brokering conversations across the market. For the roughly 15 trainees Weil recruited each year, and for candidates already committed to future intakes, that outreach may determine whether months of study and preparation still convert into qualification.
